BenQ has added to its portfolio of flicker-free monitor with two new models in the EW40 series. The EW2440L and the EW2740L come with 24" and 27" Full HD VA panels featuring LED backlighting. It claims to be able to show true 8-bit images for better colour shades as against the 6-bit done by run-of-the-mill panels. They claim to provide wide viewing angles of up to 178 degrees in any direction. The monitors sport thin bezels that result in a better visual appeal.
One of the main USPs of these monitors is the presence of MHL connectivity, which allows you to hook it up to a compatible smartphone and get the visuals on the big screen. With smartphones being used as media players predominantly, such a connectivity option makes good sense. The monitors also feature two HDMI ports to connect HD sources such as a PC, media player, Blu-ray drive, or a gaming console and in-built speakers can play audio if you don't want to connect external speakers via the in-built 3.5 mm stereo jack. D-Sub interface is also present to connect to the PC.
These monitors boast of Cinema Mode, which the company claims, does some post-processing on video content using proprietary algorithm to make it look better. Low resolution videos are said to be upscaled to better quality via Super Resolution image enhancement feature. Smart Focus is a nifty feature that allows you to pinpoint a window or area on the screen and make that the focal point so that the rest of the visual content is concealed and you can focus on just what you require. The Senseye 3 technology comes with six viewing preset settings to match your requirements. With a response time of 4 ms (GTG), you can rest assured that you will not be plagued by ghosting issues while viewing fast action movies or games.
A unique feature of these Eye-Care design monitors is that they have flicker-free backlighting. In case you are wondering, a normal LCD monitor (even with LED backlighting) is not flicker-free because it uses pulse-width modulation (PWM) to control the brightness. The flicker may not be visible at high brightness levels, but it becomes very evident and tiring to the eyes when you reduce the brightness. This is because the period for which the backlight is active in a PWM duty cycle gets shortened. Unlike regular monitors, these feature a continuous backlighting not based on PWM so they don't flicker. The result is that these does not cause fatigue to eyes even when viewed for a long duration. It also has the Low Blue Light mode, which means that the monitor produces very little of the blue spectrum light that is known to be one of the leading eye damage, eye strain, headaches, and sleeping disorders for those who sit in front of computer monitors for long hours.
The BenQ EW2440L and the EW 2740L cost Rs 18,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively. The previously released flicker-free models GW2760HS and VL2040AZ now cost Rs 21,000 and Rs 6900 respectively.
