Review: Creative Woof

Creative Woof
Price: Rs 1975 (Amazon.in)

We have all been in situations when we had to listen to music over mobile phone speaker, such as when we live in hostels or go out camping. However, the audio quality of mobile speakerphone leaves you wanting for something more, but you cannot carry a speaker with you everywhere. This is where the Creative Woof comes in. This is a Bluetooth speaker with handsfree functionality, and it is tiny enough to fit on the palm of your hand. Let’s see if this is really a viable option for portable speaker requirements.

Features
The Creative Woof is shaped like a tiny urn or can even pass off as a paperweight as it looks nothing like a speaker. This solidly built speaker has a bell shaped body slightly tapering towards the top, primarily made of stainless steel, with the speaker driver at the top covered by shiny metallic grill.

The top grill has a Bluetooth connect button at the centre. This button has backlit blue LED, which blinks while it is in the connect mode, and becomes steady once connected. The button also serves to receive and end calls when the Woof is being used as a speakerphone.

The recessed bottom part of the Woof is made of plastic. Here, there is a set of three playback control buttons for Previous, Play/Pause, Next, on one side. Bang opposite to this is a 3.5 mm stereo input socket adjacent to a micro-USB port to charge the Woof’s inbuilt battery.

The bottom surface has a layer of rubber stuck to it to ensure that the Woof doesn’t move around on any surface it is placed upon during playback. An On/Off slider button is present over here.

With a circumference of 7.4 cm and height of 6.5 cm, it is very portable, although its weight of 255 grams makes it a little heavier for the size.

Performance
The Woof can be easily connected to any Bluetooth device within seconds. On powering it on or while connecting, the speaker announces its connected status in a male voice. If you use it with an iOS device, you will also be able to see the battery charge in real time at the top right of the screen. If you want to connect it to a non-Bluetooth device, then a 3.5 mm stereo-to-stereo cable can get that job done. Volume level can only be controlled from the playback device.

The Woof looks tiny, but looks are deceptive in this case. At the maximum volume, this little baby can rock a medium sized room with ease. There is not even a hint of distortion at even the highest volume. The bass levels are better than your average laptop speakers, although you should obviously not expect too much in this frequency range. Treble and mid-range is more faithfully reproduced and allows the sound to literally engulf you. It is really hard to believe that this little speaker can produce such loud and clear sound.

As far as its handsfree functionality is concerned, the speaker quality is great with clear audio, but the microphone is bad at picking audio. You need to sit within a meter of the Woof to hope that the other party will be able to hear what you are saying.

Bluetooth range is not the best I have seen for a portable speaker. In this case, the sound starts getting choppy at around 3 m of direct line of sight. This further reduces rapidly as the obstructions such as walls are introduced.

Battery Life
True to its specifications, the speaker lasted for 6.5 hours of continuous music playback at maximum volume.

My Verdict
The Creative Woof is a sturdy and good-looking Bluetooth speaker that performs really well and is surprisingly loud for its size. It certainly sounds a lot better than your laptop speakers, and definitely much better than phone or tablet speakers. However, the price seems to be too high for what you get and there are better options available for half the price from manufacturers such as Portronics, although they don’t sound as good. If price is not much of an issue, then you can definitely get yourself the Creative Woof. In addition to the Silver colour piece reviewed here, the Woof is also available in Red, Blue, and Gun Metal colours.

Pros: Good sound quality, Sturdy build quality, Good looks, Long battery life.

Cons: Pricey, Doesn’t support USB playback, Limited Bluetooth range, Poor microphone quality for handsfree.
