Review: Blueair Sense+ Air Purifier

Price: Rs 45,000 (Spandeal.com)
Air purifiers are fast becoming a necessity today, with the ever-increasing level of air pollution and the air we breathe slowly becoming a serious health hazard. You can read more about the harmful effects of air pollutants and their ability to increase lung cancer risk in a study published over here. Thankfully, many manufacturers have already started bringing air purifiers to the Indian market. The Swedish air purifier company Blueair has also introduced the Sense+ for home use. I have been giving it a try for some time now, so it’s time to post its review.

Review: Brother DCP-T500W

MRP: Rs 12,150
It seems like every printer manufacturer is on the “separate ink tanks” bandwagon, and Brother is no exception. Brother has been in the printer and MFD industry for quite some time and has usually catered more to offices than to home users. The DCP-T500W also targets SoHo consumers, but it has features such as a considerably affordable pricing, wireless connectivity, and photo printing that should also entice home users. I had a chance to review the unit. So let’s find out how well it fares.

Review: Lenovo YOGA 3 Pro (256 GB SSD)

Lenovo YOGA 3 Pro (256 GB SSD)
Price: Rs 1,15,000

Ultrabooks are known to be slim and light. At the CES this year, Lenovo introduced the YOGA 3 Pro, which is 17% slimmer and 14% lighter than its predecessor. Of course, at the name suggests, it can perform yoga, that is it is flexible enough for the screen to fold backwards to give it a tablet-like form factor. Powered by the latest Intel’s Core M-70 (Broadwell) CPU, this is a completely fanless laptop, meaning no moving parts, and consequently should result in a better battery life. It has an insanely hi-res touch screen, complementing Windows 8.1. Let’s take a look at the Lenovo YOGA 3 Pro in details.

Review: Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G

Price: Rs 10,000 (Flipkart.com)
Xiaomi has for long had a policy of selling only one handset at a time in India, probably to prevent cannibalisation within its own camp. The company has discontinued the Redmi Note a week ago, but is now selling its replacement – Redmi Note 4G, along with the smaller and previously discontinued Redmi 1S, probably because it seems to have realised that these are two completely different devices at different price points for different demographics and will not hinder the sale of one another. The phablet Redmi Note 4G may look the same as the Redmi Note, but the internals are different. While the older model was a dual SIM handset with a MediaTek octo-core CPU, the newer model has a single SIM but with 4G capability, and features a quad-core Snapdragon CPU. At a price point of Rs 10,000, which is a thousand rupees more than the previous version, let’s find out if the Redmi Note 4G is really worth the extra premium. Please note that this review may appear like a copy-paste of the Redmi Note review, because it is partially true, where the two devices have the same features.

Review: Creative Woof

Creative Woof
Price: Rs 1975 (Amazon.in)

We have all been in situations when we had to listen to music over mobile phone speaker, such as when we live in hostels or go out camping. However, the audio quality of mobile speakerphone leaves you wanting for something more, but you cannot carry a speaker with you everywhere. This is where the Creative Woof comes in. This is a Bluetooth speaker with handsfree functionality, and it is tiny enough to fit on the palm of your hand. Let’s see if this is really a viable option for portable speaker requirements.

Review: Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9” 32 GB, Wi-Fi (2013 edition)

MRP: Rs 36,000 (eBay.in)

Amazon is known for its humungous e-books store and also for its amazing Kindle brand of e-book readers. With the advent of Android tablets, the company also felt the pressure to introduce an Android-based Kindle tablet known as the Kindle Fire, which broke away from the traditional concept of e-ink screen. It did well and that's why the company later introduced the Kindle Fire HD and HDX in two screen sizes having more pixels for crisper text and images. Until now, the Kindle Fire HDX was not available in India, and Amazon has still not officially launched it here. But thanks to eBay.in, it is now possible for us to buy in local currency without having to worry about customs hassles. Let's take a look at whether this is really worth the extra bucks.

Review: Xiaomi Mi 3 - Finally, Premium Smartphone At Budget Pricing

Xiaomi Mi 3
Price: Rs 14,000 (Flipkart.com)

The smartphone market is probably the most varied today, when it comes to the sheer number of mobile phones and models by various manufacturers, each trying to up the ante in face of competition. In a budget market such as India, price is considered to be the driving force for sales of any product, and the mobile phone is not an exception. The Chinese manufacturer, Xiaomi, which had taken China by storm last year with its Xiaomi Mi 3 Android smartphone with high-end specs, registering record sales, has finally turned its attention to one of the most lucrative markets - India. The phone has been finally launched in India at an attractive price of Rs 14,000. Some of the high-end features of the phone includes a Snapdragon quad-core CPU with 2 GB RAM, 5" Full HD IPS screen, and 13 MP camera with Full HD recording. Review: Antec GX700 - A Great Combination Of Looks, Performance, And Price

Price: Rs 4267

For most of us mere mortals who haven't yet moved on to using portable computing devices, a cabinet is simply a metal box into which an assembled computer is placed. However, enthusiasts and gamers have a completely different picture in mind for PC cabinets. To these, and understandably so, it is more about what functionality it supports, what additional features it incorporates, whether it has good ventilation, whether it is strong enough, and also how good it looks. That last point is more about bragging rights than about the functional purpose of the cabinet. Antec has been around since a long time and has got quite a range of products for the enthusiast community. The company has been gracious enough to send me for review, the GX700 gaming cabinet, which is a GX Series cabinet with an awesome military theme. I have tried my hand out at the cabinet. Read on.

Review: Panasonic VIERA TH-P50ST60D - The Last Of The Plasmas Can Still Hold Its Own

MRP: Rs 1,25,000 (market price starting at Rs 1,00,000)

Television technology has come a long way with LED-backlit TVs currently being the TV technology of popular choice. However, Plasma TV technology continues to hold its own purely because of its inherently superior image quality. Panasonic has been one of the main proponents of this ageing technology and is still one of the largest Plasma TV makers in the market. The company has got the VIERA TH-P50ST60D belonging to the ST60 series, which is its 2013 mid-range offering. However, the performance surprised me. Read on.

Review: Urbanears Plattan - Embodies Scandinavian Minimalism, Tremendous On Performance

Urbanears Plattan
MRP: Rs 5750 (Available for Rs 5306 (Rediff Shopping), Rs 4756 (bitFang.com), Rs 5750 (Flipkart.com))

I occasionally receive headphones that appear to be different from the crowd in some ways. This time, I have received the Urbanear Plattan, which is one such model with looks that mix casual simplicity with style. It is available in several colours, with most colours named after fruits and vegetables. I had never tried this Stockholm-based Swedish brand until now and was a bit sceptical about its ability to perform. However, I was pleasantly surprised at what I discovered. Read on.

Review: Silicon Power Armor A30 1 TB - SuperSpeed USB 3.0 And High Capacity Put To Good Use

I have been reviewing portable hard drives since long and have seen them evolve. They used to be plain boring before; then they became trendy and fashionable. The one which I have for review today is a military grade rugged drive that should be a perfect companion for the road warrior, and yet it looks very elegant. I am talking about the Silicon Power Armor A30 with a huge 1 TB capacity and the super-fast USB 3.0 interface. Silicon Power has been around for quite some time now in the field of storage and I have previously tested USB Flash drives manufactured by them. I therefore have high hopes from this drive and this review will try to find out whether or not those hopes are fulfilled.

Gravity: Scientific Hits And Misses

Gravity - the new sci-fi space disaster/survival thriller by Alfonso Cuaron, featuring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney is arguably one of the best movies this year. Without going too much into details and spoilers (although there may be some unavoidable spoilers: you have been warned), the premise of the movie is about things going wrong on a routine space mission and the quest for survival in the seemingly hopeless void of space. Sandra Bullock plays bio-medical engineer Dr Ryan Stone, who is on her maiden space shuttle mission as a Mission Specialist, while George Clooney plays veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski, in final mission of his career. While everything seems to be going just fine during an EVA (extra vehicular activity), space debris from a Russian missile strike aimed to destroy its defunct satellite, results in a chain reaction that destroys the space shuttle with several other astronauts, leaving our two protagonist astronauts stranded in space, only tethered to each other, being only be able to communicate with each other as the contact with Mission Control is lost.
