Review: Creative MUVO 20

Creative MUVO 20
Price: Rs 4500 (Amazon.in)

Portable Bluetooth wireless speakers are the in thing in this age of mobile phones and tablets, and Creative has got a whole range to suit your needs. For those of you who want something louder than the usual stuff, Creative has the MUVO 20, which aim to give you really loud performance and not cost an arm and a leg. The MUVO 20 supports Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP, thus can pair with just about any Bluetooth device. Additionally, it works as a handsfree speaker. I got my hands on one of these and tested it out. We’ll take a look at what lies in store with the Creative MUVO 20.

Features
The Creative MUVO 20 is made entirely out of polymer and has a very good build quality. The size is manageable, but not as small as some of the other Bluetooth speakers. Weighing slightly over a kilogram, you can easily carry it in a rucksack. It has a rectangular shape when looked at from the front. The front has triangular pattern grill backed up with fine cloth covering and protecting the drivers against dust, but without affecting the audio quality. Speaking of which, there are 3” drivers behind the grill providing stereo sound output.

There are volume control buttons in two of the grill holes near the centre. A triangular LED indicator is situated in the triangular grill hole just besides these buttons. This glows green when the speaker is not paired with a Bluetooth device, white when paired, and blinks white when in pairing mode.

A Bluetooth connect button is also present adjacent to this LED. It also serves as play/pause button during audio playback, and call connect/disconnect button during a call. A red LED indicator is also present at the centre to indicate charging.

The front is slightly angled to the back when the speaker is placed on a surface. The top of the MUVO 20 is plain and slanting down towards the back. It has an NFC logo at the centre, indicating that this speaker can be quickly paired with NFC devices. The sides have depressions, serving as handles to grip and lift the speaker. There are two rubber strips on the left and right of the bottom surface to secure the speaker on a flat surface and prevent it from moving around due to vibrations while playing music.

A bass reflex port is present on one side at the back of the speaker, to enable better reproduction of low frequency sounds. A recessed area at the back houses various ports and the power button. In addition to Bluetooth, the speaker can connect to an audio source via a wired connection, thanks to a stereo 3.5 mm audio port. Like many higher end Bluetooth speakers, this one has a full USB port to charge your devices using the internal battery. This can prove to be very useful when you do not have access to any power socket to charge your mobile/tablet as the speaker essentially serves as an external battery pack. A micro-USB port is also present to charge the inbuilt battery. I must mention here that Creative has only provided a micro-USB data cable with the speaker, although it would have been better if it would have also thrown in a charger for the price.

Performance
NFC allows the MUVO 20 to connect to a compatible device in just a few moments without any hassle. Bluetooth connectivity is also very easy and convenient.

On powering it on or while connecting, the speaker announces its connected status in a female voice. The voice also speaks out when it is in pairing mode and when it is being factory reset. On pressing the Bluetooth button twice, the voice speaks out the current battery level.

A 3.5 mm stereo-to-stereo cable can be used to connect it to a wired audio source in the absence of Bluetooth. Volume level can only be controlled from the speaker as well as from the playback device and both the controls are independent of each other.

The MUVO 20 may not be large, but it can get pretty loud. It is good enough to fill a medium size room with enough sound so that you might want to lower the volume a bit. There is no audio distortion at up to 80% of volume, but slight distortion becomes noticeable above this volume, especially when it comes to low frequency sounds. The bass reproduction is much better than what I expected, especially coming from a speaker without a woofer. Treble and mid-range is more faithfully reproduced and allows the sound to literally engulf you. The sound is loud and clear for music as well as movies and games. The speaker supports aptX and SBC audio codecs on Bluetooth.

As mentioned earlier, the MUVO 20 also features handsfree functionality, meaning that there is a microphone inside. It does work as expected and the audio quality was found to be clear at both ends. This makes it a good option for conference group calls.

Bluetooth range is quite good. The sound starts getting choppy at around 5 m of direct line of sight. This further reduces rapidly as the obstructions such as walls are introduced.

Battery Life
True to its specifications, the speaker lasted for 9.5 hours of continuous music playback at maximum volume.

My Verdict
The Creative MUVO 20 sounds really good for its size and plays really loud. The audio quality is good and its styling makes it good to adorn even the living room without looking out of place. You can take them to your hostel or outing and they will serve well as not just good speakers, but also as a speakerphone handsfree and a power backup. It definitely sounds a lot better than laptop speakers, and definitely much better than phone or tablet speakers. Creative could have provided memory card or USB playback to increase its value, but it seems to have reserved that for its higher end Roar speaker. The price may seem to be a little too much, but the MUVO 20 is still worth the price for what you get. The MUVO 20 is available in white and black colours.
