VU Shows Off World's First Customisable Luxury TVs In India

VU held India's first Television Trunk Show in Mumbai today to show off the world's first customisable luxury televisions. The event was held at the Four Season's hotels at Worli and I was invited. The company showcased its 50", 55", 65", and 84" LED-backlit LCD TVs, of which the 84" is the recently launched 3D model sporting Ultra HD or 4K panel with 3840x2160 pixels. Of course, there were also smaller screen models with touch screen just to take a look. The purpose of the event was to allow consumers and reviewers to not only get up, close, and personal with the various VU TV models, but also avail the one-day-only discounted price offers such as a 50" LED TV free on purchase of the 84" model.

VU CEO Devita Saraf, who was also present at the event, mentioned that this is currently the only TV solution in the world with customisation options. Customers can choose many things such as the bezel type and colour, touch or non-touch screen, and variety of mountings. They can even choose the operating system in case they want to have a PC built in the TV and it is then known as Super TV. Saraf said that the company has an exclusive contract with Croma retail chain and it will remain so in the near future at least. She did mention though, that consumers can also drop in at VU showrooms to take a look at the various customisation options and also purchase the television of their choice. She also pointed out that it will soon be possible to select the customisations online and submit your name and email so that the VU customer support will contact you to proceed with the purchase.

I was shown a demonstration of the upcoming customisation feature that will be available on the VU website in a few days. Once you visit this URL, you can choose various parameters such as screen size, touch or non-touch, bezel type and colour including one with embedded Swarovski crystals, mounting (floor, wall, or ceiling), sound bar, webcam, microphone, and other options. In case you opt for the Super TV, you can choose computer OS from Windows, Mac OS, Android, and Ubuntu, CPU, RAM, and hard drive. This customisation approach has its advantage. Normally, when you plan on buying a TV, you start looking for different models and whether or not they have the features you require. However, with VU's customisation approach, you can decide on the features you require and order a customised TV to your satisfaction.

The 84" Ultra HD model looks very good and the image quality is superlative. It has passive 3D technology with lightweight eyewear since it doesn't contain any battery. Passive 3D technology effectively halves the display resolution of the image (one half for the left eye and other half for the right eye) due to the panel having alternating opposite polarised lines of pixels (either horizontal or vertical). This reduces the image quality in 3D and the lines of pixels are usually visible, especially if you are keen eyed. However, in case of the 84" Ultra HD model from VU, while the passive 3D technology still halves the effective numbers of pixels of the image, it is still 1080p or Full HD and therefore looks good. The smaller models were Full HD and came with active 3D technology using the slightly heavier battery-powered LCD shutter-glasses.

The 84" Ultra HD TV is simply fabulous and awe-inspiring to look at

There was even a 3D camcorder from VU, feeding live 3D video stream to the 84" TV

In addition to the regular remote control, the Super TVs come with a wireless keyboard with trackpad. Additionally, you can also opt for a smaller remote control, which looks like a BlackBerry phone but has all the buttons and the trackpad as present on the keyboard. This smaller smart remote control is more convenient to use while relaxing on a sofa and watching the TV. The remote controls work on RF instead of infrared, and therefore do not need direct line of sight and even work through solid objects including walls. There are also two types of stylus pens without batteries that can be used with touchscreen models: one is regular and the other with a telescopic aerial-like extension that allows it to be used to make presentations.

VU TVs also allow you to get the DTH set top box built inside the TV. You only need to provide the details of your DTH provider to get this done. Effectively, this leaves you with just the power cable and the DTH cable coming out of the TV and gets rid of a separate PC and set top box, thus saving space and also making it look good.

All of the televisions boast of A+ grade IPS panels and they do look good too. In spite of having computer components inside, the TVs are still just as thin as TVs from other brands without the computer feature.

The Super TVs are surprisingly thin even with a computer inside

The good thing about VU TVs is that you can purchase a Super TV and get VU to upgrade the hardware later if you require. In fact, you can buy a TV without built-in computer and still have the option to get it upgraded to a Super TV later. VU has got special Diwali Phatake Pe Phataka offers that include discounted rates and offers with a 24" TV free with 50" and 55" models for this festive season which you can check out over here.
