Apple Could Go “Bigger” Screen With iPhone 6 In 2014

We keep on criticizing Samsung for leading the charge in the mobile phone industry as it keeps on blowing up screen sizes that may one day match TVs. It is not really a wonder that many a manufacturers are following suit simply because there really is a demand for large screen phones in India. However, it may come to you as a shocker that as rumour has it, the next iPhone may come with a much larger screen.

According to a report by DisplaySearch Blog, the iPhone 6 could come with a screen size of either 4.7” or even 5.7”. The pixel dimensions will assume standard HD values with being 1280x720 for 4.7” and 1920x1080 for 5.7”, which should be a good thing for multimedia purposes as against the non-standard dimensions that iPhones have been sporting thus far. Additionally, it is also mentioned that a new iPad with a 12.9” screen and 2732x2048 pixel dimensions is in the pipeline. Other devices mentioned are 55” and 65” Apple TVs with 4Kx2K and 120 Hz LCD and the iWatch with 1.3”/1.63” 320x320 flexible AMOLED screen. Additionally, the report also states that a new MacBook Air with a 12” 2304x1440 screen and lower power consumption is being prepared.

While the iPhone 6 release date is mentioned as Q2 2014 and that of the new 12.9” iPad as well as the new MacBook Air as simply 2014, the Apple TV is slated to show up in Q3 2014 and the iWatch in Q4 2014. The website quotes Chinese suppliers chain as the source of this rumour. As with any rumour, you should take it with a pinch of salt.

We had earlier seen Nokia fall prey to the market pressure by creating the Lumia 625 with a 4.7” screen, the largest available in a Windows Phone 8 device. It is heartening to see that Apple may also succumb to market forces and tread the same path. The original iPhone was launched with a 3.5” screen and that measurement stayed till the iPhone 4S with the company advancing the size by 0.5” to 4” when it launched the iPhone 5. If you ask me, the 3.5” screen size is just perfect for single-handed phone use and anything larger simply becomes uncomfortable. However, it seems that Apple may have to let go of that age-old proven design philosophy and do what is best for business.
