Review: Teewe 2

MRP: Rs 2,399 (Rs 2,000 on Amazon.in)

If you are one of those who are stuck with a non-smart TV bought a few years ago, don’t fret too much, because you can get the Teewe 2 media streaming dongle and make your TV smarter. The Teewe 2 is a small device that plugs into your TV’s HDMI port and suddenly, your TV starts showing YouTube videos and even stream videos and other media from your phone and computer. Let’s take a look at what this tiny little device has got to offer.

Box Contents

  • The box contains the following.
  • Teewe 2 dongle
  • USB cable
  • USB adapter
  • HDMI extension cable
  • User manual
That's about all you need to get the device started.

Features

The Teewe 2 is a little smaller than its predecessor and thankfully, doesn’t have the rubbery dust-magnet coating. The device is slightly larger than a regular USB flash drive, and is almost as lightweight.

It is encapsulated in a black plastic body with a prominent Teewe logo and name engraving on the front face and perforations to serve for ventilation on three sides. A full-size HDMI plug is present at one end. There is a micro-USB port on one side for power input as the device doesn’t have any internal power source. Just besides this, there is a recovery pin to reset the device to factory defaults in case of a problem.

Setting up the Teewe 2 is fairly straightforward. Plug in the device into a free HDMI port of the TV. You can use the bundled HDMI extension cable if your TV’s HDMI port is located hard to reach at the back. While the bundled USB adapter can be used to power the device, it can also be easily powered up via a free USB port on the TV. Make sure that you have a Wi-Fi router with internet access, within range of the device as it is required for Teewe 2 to function.

Next, you need to download and install the Teewe app to your mobile device. The app is available for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. After switching on the TV and the device, the app can be launched. You can now follow the instructions on the TV screen and the app to finish the configuration. The thing that needs to be kept in mind is that the mobile device will act as a remote control for the Teewe 2 and hence it needs to be on the same Wi-Fi network as the Teewe 2.

While the documentation states that you cannot use the Teewe 2 with a Wi-Fi network having MAC ID filtering, it is not true. It is possible to use it with a MAC ID filtered Wi-Fi network after find out and allowing access to the MAC address of the Teewe 2, which can be found on the device registration page of the app.

A desktop application is available for PC as well as Mac, which lets you control your Teewe from the desktop. You can also stream media from your computer and the network to the big screen via Teewe using this app. You can even mirror the entire desktop screen onto the television screen. For those who may not want to install the application, there is a Chrome browser plugin that also lets you do almost everything.

For those who use Airtel broadband, Teewe offers 60 GB data worth Rs 1500 for free. Also on offer is Eros Now premium subscription worth Rs 600 for 2 months, which will allow you to watch premium Indian movies from the service.

Performance

As mentioned earlier, the installation is very easy. All you need is a Wi-Fi router with internet connection and a mobile phone supporting the Teewe app and you are good to go.

The Teewe app is essentially the remote control for the Teewe device. There are no controls on the Teewe dongle, so you have to do everything from the app.

You can use only one device with the Teewe device at a time. If you wish to use another mobile device, you have to set it up with Teewe, which means that it will lose connection with the first mobile device.

When the Teewe setup is completed, all you see on the TV screen is a blank Teewee screen. I really wish there could be some way to get some apps in there or at least a basic web browser.

YouTube videos played very well and without a stutter. The app allows you to choose quality between standard and HD. However, this also means that you cannot choose between multiple bit rates usually available via YouTube. Thus, when you choose HD, you cannot be sure if it is actually playing at 720p, 1080p, 2K, or 4K.

The app allows you to select only a few Indian languages to display its curated YouTube content. However, you can type in to search and content from other languages also gets displayed. You can watch quite a few full movies on YouTube with the Teewe.

Media streaming allows you to watch videos, music, and photos from your collection on your TV using the Teewe. Only Wi-Fi bandwidth and no internet bandwidth is used during this streaming. I didn’t find any issues when I tried out this feature as even high bit rate 1080p videos played very well.

The dongle got warm when used for hours, but the perforations in its casing help keep temperatures under control.

My Verdict

I must make it clear that the Teewe 2 is essentially a dongle that lets you watch YouTube videos on your TV. To say that it makes your non-smart TV a smart TV will be overstating the facts as there is no support for any inbuilt web browser or any way to install applications. With that out of the way, the Teewe excels at what it is meant to do. It is very easy to install and even easier to use. Basically, anyone who knows how to use apps on their mobile devices will have no problem using the Teewe. As long as you have good internet bandwidth, you will be able to watch high quality YouTube without bothering about disturbing ads. Media streaming is another feature that will get you hooked onto the device because of the sheer convenience it offers you by not requiring you to plug any cables to watch movies from your hard drive on your TV.

Coming to the cost of the device, the MRP of Rs 2400 is pretty good for what you get. The current Amazon.in pricing of Rs 2,000 makes the deal even sweeter. This includes lifetime support via a toll free number. If you want more, you can go for the more expensive Chromecast or an Android dongle to convert your TV into a full-fledged smart TV. For the rest, the Teewe 2 is perfectly capable of delivering what it promises to deliver.

Pros: Very easy to setup and use; Tiny and manageable size; Bypasses YouTube ads; Excellent media streaming capabilities; Screen mirroring from PC/Mac.

Cons: Doesn’t do anything more than video streaming (no web browser or apps support); Cannot choose exact video streaming bit rate.
